The figures tell the story of the huge following for boxing in the Visayas and Mindanao regions in Southern Philippines.
The recent ?Invasion: Philippines vs The World? fight card telecast by the pre-eminent broadcast network ABS-CBN over Channel 2 turned in incredible audience shares in the south.
Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today learned that in the Visayas region the audience share was a whopping 82 percent while in Mindanao, the rating was 46.7 percent and the audience share an even higher 86 percent.
The Mega Manila ratings for the main event which featured WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa in a mandatory title defense against former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin rated some 32 percent.
Last Sunday?s much less publicized light heavyweight battle for the Ring Magazine championship belt between Joe Calzaghe and ageing Bernard Hopkins which was telecast by Studio 23 rated 8.2 percent which was considered good since the UHF Channel is only beginning to program some boxing specials.
The rating was at par with the ABC 5 ratings of the December 2 fight card at the Araneta Coliseum which featured Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista and AJ ?Bazooka? Banal against Mexican opponents.
Rating for a program calculates the percentage of all television households ? both using TV and not using TV while share measures the percentage of viewers who are actually watching a particular program.
