Laguna earns twin wins in PCAP

MANILA---Laguna once again ruled Wednesday's match of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines after ousting Ventura Palawan-Albay Queen's Gambit and Cebu City Machers virtually held at Chess.com Platform.

The Heroes began the evening with 16-5 demolition over Palawan and followed it up with 19-2 domination over Cebu to climb to 12-7 slate.

"These twin victories tonight are good motivation as we prepare for the upcoming tough matches. I would like to commend all the players especially GM Banjo, IM Angelo and Richie for scoring perfect points in both matches," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods and Engr. Antonio Balinas of AC Balinas Construction and Steel Works.

The squad stunned Palawan in the blitz game with wins by two-time Asian junior champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr (Board 1), eight-time Illinois USA Champion International Master Angelo Young (Board 4), Richie Jocson (Board 5) and Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo (Board 6).

In rapid category, Laguna dismantled Palawan behind victories by Barcenilla (Board 1), Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus (Board 2), Woman International Master Ummi Fisabilillahh of Indonesia (Board 3), Young (Board 4), Jocson (Board 5) and Lorenzo (Board 6).

Against Cebu, Laguna triumphed in the blitz game via full points from Barcenilla (Board 1), Literatus (Board 2), Fisabilillahh (Board 3), Young (Board 4), John Perzeus Orozco (Board 5), Lorenzo (Board 6) and Jocson (Board 7).

The team also toppled Cebu in the rapid game on two points by Barcenilla (Board 1), Literatus (Board 2), Fisabilillahh (Board 3), Young (Board 4), Orozco (Board 5) and Jocson (Board 7).-Marlon Bernardino-
