MANILA---Filipino International Master Oliver Dimakiling grabbed the runner-up honors of the 2022 SG Chess Festival Blitz with the Stars held at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore on Sunday, June 19, 2022.
The 42-year-old Dimakiling, who hails from Davao City, bowed to International Master James Morris of Australia, 0-2, in their recently-concluded championship match.
Dimakiling, who is already based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, earlier dismantled Woman Grandmaster Gong Qianyun of Singapore, 2-0, in the Round-of-16, before eking out an 2-0 victory over Fide Master Timothy Chan in the Round-of-8.
In the semifinals, the Dabawenyo escaped past via Armageddon tie breaker over Grandmaster Kevin Goh Wei Ming of Singapore, 2-1, to arrange a titular showdown with Morris.
Dimakiling settled fourth overall in the Preliminary round in this 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment time control format.
Last Saturday, June 18, 2022 Dimakiling finished second place in the tough Grand Copthorne Professor Lim Kok Ann Invitational GM Tournament 2022 in Grand Copthorne Waterfront, Singapore.
Dimakiling scored 6.0 points on five wins, two draws, and two losses to finish as first runner-up to the tournament behind champion Singapore's newly minted Grandmaster Tin Jingya who scored seven points.
While Dimakiling is happy with his win, the Davaoeño is sad since he failed to score 1.5 points in the two rounds to clinch his third and final Grandmaster (GM) norm.
With his back-to-back runner-up place, Dimakiling receive a total of 1,000 Singapore Dollar (SGD 800 for Invitational GM Tournament and SGD 200 for Blitz game).-Marlon Bernardino-
