
Laguna Heroes on a roll in PCAP online chess tourney

MANILA -- The Laguna Heroes had another perfect evening in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament. It swept its two Wednesday matches being held thru Chess.com platform.
The Laguna Heroes opened the double-header matches with a 14.5-6.5 domination over Rizal Batch Towers followed by a 13.5-7.5 rout of Quezon City Simba's Tribe to stay on top in the Northern Division at 8-3.
"We are happy that we won against Rizal and Quezon City. Hope we can remain in our winning ways," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods and Engr. Antonio Balinas of AC Balinas Construction and Steel Work.
Laguna barely defeated Quezon City in the blitz event, 4.5-2.5, behind triumphs by two-time Asian Junior Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. (Board 1), Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus (Board 2), Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez (Board 3), and eight-time Illinois USA Champion International Master Angelo Abundo Young (Board 4).
Barcenilla beat Joseph Navarro, Literatus waylaid Wagish Kumar Rai, Enriquez edged Michaela Concio and Young toppled playing team owner Danilo Ponay.
Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr. (Board 5), National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. (Board 6)and Freddie Talaboc (Board 7) carried the good fight for the Quezon City Simba's Tribe who is also backed up by Mr. Samivin delos Santos.
Suelo subdued Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, Bernardino drew with Richie Jocson while Talaboc won by default over Christian Nanola.
The Laguna Heroes dominated Quezon City in rapid game,9-5, behind wins by Barcenilla (Board 1), Literatus (Board 2), Michella Concio (Board 3) and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad (Board 4).
Barcenilla trounced Navarro, Literatus smashed Rai, Michella walloped her elder sister Michaela Concio and Bagamasbad nipped Ponay.
Suelo (Board 5), Bernardino (Board 6) and Talaboc (Board 7), meantime control the lower boards in favor of Quezon City.
Suelo crushed again Lorenzo, Bernardino halving the points again with Jocson while another default wins by Talaboc over Nanola.-Marlon Bernardino-
