LAPU LAPU CITY, CEBU -- Reigning OPBF lightweight champion 'Komong Bato' (Hands of Stone) Randy Suico stopped visiting Thai Songkom Jockygym in the 3rd round while Richard Olisa snatched the Philippine superfly crown from defending champion Eden Sonsona during last night's 'Kadaugan sa Mactan' boxing extravaganza at the jampacked Lapu Lapu City Auditorium here.
Graced by some of the nation's top boxing personalities ang local officials headed by WBC super featherweight world champion Manny Pacquiao and reigning WBO world bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa, the event, which is part of the week-long celebration in this city's commemoration of the defeat of the Spanish invader Ferdinand Magellan in the hands of local chieftain Lapu Lapu, drew thousands of spectators squeezed shoulder to shoulder and chest to chest to the oven hot standing room only auditorium.
Suico did not fail to entertain the crowd as he put the journeyman Thai to sleep with his vaunted right hand at 2:10 in the third round. Suico has now improved his win-loss record to 28-3 with 24 knockouts and is now looking forward to have another crack at the world's top lightweights.
The showdown between Eden Sonsona and Richard Olisa drifted into a battle of wits from the corners as both fighters were trying to outsmart each other and it looked like Aljoe Jaro, who manages and coaches Olisa, took the upperhand over his rivals Buboy Fernandez and the veteran Lito Mondejar, who were on Sonsona's corner, by making the right adjustments for his ward. In the end it was Olisa's well timed counters over Sonsona's bursts of punches that spelled the difference on a very close fight that resulted in a split decision victory for Olisa. Two judges had 115-113 for Olisa while a third judge had it 115-113 for Sonsona.
The highly successful event was promoted by MP Promotions in association with the Lapu Lapu City government, Wakee Salud International and Solar Sports.
