
Cavite, Caloocan chessers off to good start in PCAP online chess tourney

MANILA---CAVITE Spartans and Caloocan Loadmanna Knights got off to a blazing start by posting victories in the opening round of the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) late Saturday, May 21, 2022 virtually held at chess.com platform.
Cavite Spartans, led by NM Darian Nguyen and CM Jayson San Jose Visca, toppled Laguna Heroes, 13-8, while Caloocan Loadmanna Knights bannered by IM Paulo Bersamina and IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, outclassed Quezon City Simba's Tribe, 14-7, to take the headstart in the 24-team, two-division tournament.
Nguyen swept Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus., while Visca beat Richie Jocson and Christian Nanola in blitz and rapid matches, respectively to power the Spartans to victory.
Backing up Nguyen and Visca are AFM Eduardo Tunguia, who blanked Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad in the senior board, AGM Voltaire Marc Paraguya, who drew with AGM Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo and another draw to Jocson; Renie Malupa drew with Vince Angelo Medina,1.5-1.5, and Rubio, who beat Nanola.
WNM Jean Karen Enriquez carried the fight for Laguna as she blasted Diana Ramos in the lady board. Lorenzo,meantime crushed Rubio in the their rapid encounter.
"Congratulations Cavite Spartans on winning against a formidable team and former champion (Laguna)," said International Master Joel Banawa, the new team owner of Cavite Spartans.
Equally impressive was Caloocan, which relied on Bersamina, who crushed Noel Jay Estacio, 3-0; Garcia, who waylaid Fide Master Carlos Edgardo Garma, 3-0; IM Chito Garma, who beat Danilo Ponay, 2.5-0.5; and Paul Sanchez, who nipped Freddie Talaboc, 2-1; and Alexis Emil Maribao, who dealt NM Robert Arellano, 2.5-0.5.
1996 Philippine Junior Champion Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr. was bright spot for Quezon as he surprised IM Barlo Nadera, 3-0, as well Michaela Concio who dealt WNM Arvie Lozano, 2-1.
Cavite Spartans new team owner is International Master Joel Banawa while Mr. Samivin delos Santos is the new co team owner of Quezon City Simba's Tribe under the leadership of Mr. Danilo Ponay.-Marlon Bernardino-
