Juanito Rubillar.
The government promotional committee that is handling the WBC light flyweight title eliminator between former world champion Omar Nino and current No. 1 and the Philippines Juanito Rubillar who is rated No. 2, has agreed to the terms set by Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde whose wife Arlene is the registered manager of Rubillar.
WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman who sought our assistance in ensuring that Elorde agrees to have Rubillar fight Omar Nino informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the promoters had agreed to a $30,000 purse for the Filipino southpaw plus the four round trip economy class airline tickets including one for a Filipino judge that Elorde had asked for.
Although Sulaiman initially said it would mean additional expenses for the promoters they apparently made the concession. The WBC president indicated he would not appoint any Mexican judges for the title eliminator but Elorde wanted a Filipino judge which, according to him, was "for the Filipino boxing fans."
Elorde said he was taking journalist Rey Danseco who is a close friend, as judge.
Sulaiman said the promoters would remit to Elorde the $5,000 advance he had asked for but wanted Rubillar to arrive in Mexico city "no later than eight to ten days before the fight for advertising purposes."
The fight is scheduled for June 7 at the Great Arena Mexico and has, according to Sulaiman has been "already fully advertised."
Sulaiman said he was very happy with Elorde's decision as "it makes me feel at ease in my own country as I have always been during all my years as president of the WBC."
Elorde had earlier incurred the ire of the WBC president when, in the midst of negotiations for the WBC title eliminator he signed a contract to fight Ulises Solis for the IBF title and turned his back on the WBC. But after the Solis fight which was scheduled to take place in Dubai was called off and moved to Mexico by matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz, Elorde pulled out and appealed to Sulaiman to go ahead with the WBC eliminator.
Omar Nino who has a record of 25-2-1 with 11 KO's. He won the title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Brian Viloria on August 10, 2006 and although he retained the title by virtue of a draw on November 18 that same year the fight was declared a "no contest" after Nino tested positive for a banned substance in a post-fight drug test. Viloria fought Edgar Sosa for the vacant title but dropped a majority decision on April 14, 2007.
Rubillar has a record of 44-10-7 with 21 knockouts.
