CONCEPCION?S OPPONENT WAS AN OLYMPIC ALTERNATE IN ATHENS

NABF super bantamweight champion Bernabe Concepcion?s opponent in his title defense on the Top Rank fight card in Queretaro, Mexico on April 26 is a former Olympic alternate on the US boxing team to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

The 33 year old Torrence Daniels was described as having "surgeon-like skills" in a buildup to a fight last November 9 in Kingman, Arizona. At that time Daniels had a record of 10-3-1 with 4 knockouts. The fight apparently didn?t push through.

In June 2003 Daniels reached the Golden Gloves finals but settled for the silver medal losing a 5-0 decision to California?s Sergio Ramos in Las Vegas. His coach, Staff Sgt. Basheer Abdullah who led the US Olympic team to Athens said he "couldn?t believe the decision."

The coach added, "I feel really sorry for that soldier (Daniels was a Staff Sgt.) because this was the second tournament he was ripped off." The coach claimed Daniels was also ripped off at the US National Championships.

Daniels won the gold medal at the Armed Forces Boxing Championships in December 2003 and eventually made the US Olympic team as an alternate.
