
Laylo, Subia bag chess crowns

Manila---Grandmaster Darwin Laylo of Dasmariñas City, Cavite ruled the Freddie (Idol) Payong-Ayong and Coach Lito Matias Memorial Chess Tournament in the Open category held at SM Cabanatuan City last May 1, 2022. At the same time, 9 years old Millery Gen Subia of Cabanatuan City reigned in the Kids Category (12 years old and below). Laylo pocketed P10,000, and a trophy and Subia earned P1,000 and a trophy.
The tournament other winners in the open category were IM Daniel Quizon (2nd place), FM Roel Abelgas (3rd place), Jerry Areque (4th place), Hamilton Arias (5th Place), NM Mark Jay Bacojo (6th place), IM Michael Concio Jr (7th place), WIM Kylen Joy Mordido (8th place), WNM Jerlyn Mae Sandiego (9th place), Lejither Uy (10th place), IM Chito Garma (11th place), Jamler Uy (12th place), Jhulo Goloran (13th place), Richie James Abeleda (14th place) and Louie Rian (15th place).
For the kids' category, Katriel Zaira Guerrero place second, Charise Angela Torres (3rd place), Carl Chester Ordonio (4th place), Remigo Buenaventura (5th place), Eliezer Marc Espiritu (6th place), Louise Ysabel Mangahas (7th place), Louise Cristel Mangahas (8th place), Winter Corpuz (9th place), and Kenichi Kyros Sudo (10th place).
Special Awards were bagged by the following chess players: WNM Daren Dela Cruz (Top Female Non-Novo Ecijano), WNM Rinoa Mariel Sadey (Top Female -Novo-Ecijano), Oshrie James Reyes (Top Youth Non-Novo Ecijano), Jonathan Alindogan (Top Novo Ecijano), Eduardo Lacson (Top Senior), Joshua Navarro (Top College), Carlo Lucas (Top High School), Willy Eugenio (Top 1800) and Rodrigo Aquino Jr. (Top 1900).
The said tournament was organized by Benjamin Bauto, Gener Subia, Richard Ocampo, Elpidio Bactol Jr, Bernie Sadey, Anthony Kim Cabacungan, Alfredo Sarmiento Jr., Dave Dysango, Juanito Guerrero, Romeo Togonon (C5 and Bertese Chess Club) and supported by Lito Abalos, FM Deniel Causo (Byaherong Coach), friends and families of the organizers and former chess players of Wesleyan University Philippines and Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.-Marlon Bernardino-
