NM Ivan Travis Cu strikes again in ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship Zone 3.3

MANILA---National Master Ivan Travis Cu stamped his class again by topping the ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship Zone 3.3 Under-14 Open Division Thursday, April 21, 2022 virtually held via Tornelo Platform.

Cu, 13 years old, a Grade 7 student of Xavier School, San Juan City, a consistent winner of the online weekly tournaments, prevailed in the U-14 Open Division with a score of 7.5 points on account of 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss to go home with the gold medal.

Dang Khoa Bui of Vietnam came in second for silver medal with 7 points followed by third placer National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City, Davao del Norte with 6.5 points for bronze medal.

Cu is coming from his recent champion as board 1 in Asian Nation Cup last March 25 to 27, 2022 virtually held at Tornelo Platform.
The Philippine Team takes the silver medal in the Under-14 Open Division.

The Philippine Team, composed of Cu, Arca and AGM Srihaan Poddar brought home the silver medal in the team category of the Under-14 Open Division. The team composition was determined by adding the points of the top 3 finishers in the category. The PH team tied with the Vietnam team with 20 points, but lost in the tie break (number of wins).

"He mostly battled against players from chess powerhouse Vietnam. The matches were played over a period of 3 nerve-wracking days, with a time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment on the Tornelo platform," said proud father Teddy Cu who watches the game live thru Tornelo Platform.

"Congratulations to the National Chess Federation of the Philippines for successfully hosting this tournament. Thank you to GM Jayson Gonzales and Susan Grace Neri for your hard work. We also wish to thank our coach, IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia for his relentless guidance in Ivan’s chess training.

National Master John Dalde Velarde of Lapu-Lapu City also won the gold medal in the Under 16 Open category.

Velarde, 15 years old, a Grade 9 student of Marie Ernestine School tallied 8.0 points on 7 wins and 2 draws.

Velarde teamed up with Michael Jan Stephen Rosalem Inigo of Bayawan City and Cedric Kahlel Abris of Mandaluyong City to snare the gold medal in the team category of the Under-16 Open Division.

Not to be outdone is Janmyl Dilan Tisado of General Trias City, Cavite who finished in a tie for first with fellow 7 pointers Candidate Master Huynh Minh Thien Nguyen of Vietnam and Yu Tian Poh of Malaysia.

After the tie break points was applied, Nguyen won first for the gold, Tisado settled for second for the silver while Poh landed at third for the bronze medal.

Tisado alongside Jan Clifford Labog of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya and AGM Robick Vohn K. Villa of Zamboanga City took the bronze medal in the team category of the Under-18 Open Division.

Woman National Master Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro City scored 7.5 points and settled for second place in the Under 14 Girls Division which topped by Le Minh Thu of Vietnam who totes 8.0 points.

Canino, Ryien Bahita of Canlaon City and AFM Yaneah Sofia Morada of Tuguegarao City went home with the silver medal in the team category of the Under-14 Girls Division.

Other PH Team winners were Caleb Royce Garcia of Manila, Zeus Lester Manaois of Santa Rosa City and Daren J. Corro of Lapu-Lapu City (Under 8 Open, silver medal); Nika Juris Nicolas of Manila, Kyle Jhazmin Clarito of Pasig City and Kirsten Monique M. Roque of Pampanga (Under 10 Girls, bronze medal); NM Al Basher Buto of Cainta, Jaymiel Piel of Ternate and Pat Ferdolf Macabulos of Mabatang, Bataan (Under 12 Open, bronze medal); Aeiona Lou Tomas Mendoza of Naga City, Stephanie Jabagat of Puerto Princesa City and Iana Angela Sotaridona of Iloilo City (Under 12 Girls, silver medal).-Marlon Bernardino-
