Surigao chessers off to good start in Mayor Sara Duterte Chess Online tournament

MANILA---Surigao Diamond Knights Chess Club got off to a blazing start in the Mayor Sara Duterte Chess Online tournament Philippine Chess League (PCL) Season 3 virtually held at lichess platform on Friday.

Kevin Mirano (12 points), Alfredo Rapanot (9 points), Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe (9 points), Cyrus Donasco (9 points) playing team owner Arena Grandmaster Rey Urbiztondo (8 points), Atty. Melzar Galicia (7 points) and Atty. Jason Bandal (6 points) delivered the wins in the opening round of the Arena Online Tournament using the 10 minutes plus two seconds increment rapid time control format in the Group D Pool A Regular Team Battle.
Backed up by congressman Ace Barbers and team manager Engr. Dodjie, the Surigao Diamond Knights Chess Club tallied a total output of 131 points (47 points, Pool A, 43 points Pool B, 12 points Female, 19 points Youth and 10 points Senior) to beat MindMovers.Ph Chess Club (100 points), Dipolog City Chess Association (97 points), Malolos City Chess Club (94 points) and Malaybalay City Chess Club (93 points).

The online tournament has a time control of ten minutes with an increment of two seconds and players must win as many games in one and half hours of play, Atty. Orbe said who is also a Candidate Master.

Top 2 in each group after 8 preliminary episodes advance to quarterfinals.

“The first round is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you’re going to perform,” said AGM Urbiztondo.
