MANILA---The 2nd RB Potot Memorial Team Tatluhan and Individual Chess Tournament is slated on April 23 to 24 at Atrium Limketkai, Lapasan in Cagayan de Oro City.

“Each team composed of three players must only have an average rating of 2000,” said Dr. Ariel Potot, an avid chess player.

“This tournament was organized to pay tribute to my father, R.B. Potot, who taught many Cebuano kids the game of chess back in the 1950s and 1960s,” added Potot, founder of RiChessmasters (RCM).

“The 2nd R.B. Potot Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament is to continue his legacy and to give the young children a chance to learn the game and even get an athletic scholarship,” added the RCM official.

The Cebuano chess legend passed away due to natural causes this past February 2021.

National Master Merben Roque had something to say, “This is a big opportunity for us to play and identify the young talent in the Over the Board tournaments who can possibly be professional athletes who will also compete for the country.”

To register their participation in the tournament, interested parties should go to the Facebook page of Richessmasters where the details, links, and forms are available. You may also contact Chief Arbiter Mr. Lorenzo Cuizon Jr. (09051166326), Tournament Director Mr. Ben Wabe (09157758261) and Treasurer Mr. Rene Goopio (09176280218).

The team tatluhan tournament will be seven rounds Swiss played in 15 minutes and 5 second increments.

Cash prizes are as follows: champion (Php30,000 plus trophy), second placer (Php20,000 plus trophy), third placer (Php10,000 plus trophy), fourth placer (Php5,000), fifth placer (Php3,000), sixth placer (Php2,000) and and seventh to 10th placers (Php500 each).

Special prizes worth P1,000 each for the top board medallist from Board 1 to 3.

RCM was established by chess enthusiasts who want to make a difference in people’s lives through training, products, and programs designed to promote cognitive skills and critical thinking for children and adults.

The 2nd R.B. Potot Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament is sponsored by Richess Masters, Barkadahan and Atrium, Limketkai, Lapasan in close cooperation with COOP Oro Integrated Cooperative, Cagayan de Oro Misamis Oriental Chess Association, Choca-RCM Higalas.-Marlon Bernardino-
