
IM Daniel Quizon wins online Chess960 tourney

MANILA---International Master Daniel Quizon topped the Fischer random chess, also known as Chess960 championship Mahalin Natin Ang Pilipinas Chess Leg 2 dubbed as Basta BBM-Sara Uniteam Bullet Arena virtually held at Lichess Platform last April 1.
After losing to Fide Master Sander Severino in the 21st game, Quizon bounced back by beating Rommel Valdez, Aglipay Oberio, National Master Jonathan Tan, Tristan Cervero, National Master Rommel Ganzon but yielded again to Severino in the final canto.
Earlier, Quizon beat Severino in the 11th game.
Quizon won the title with the highest output of 49 Arena points. He pocketed P1,000 for his efforts.
"I would like to congratulate IM Daniel Quizon for winning the online Chess960 championship and I am praying that you will be successful in your life,” said BBSU National Vice President Dr. Carlos Capitan.
Severino, on the other hand, came in second with 48 Arena points, followed by 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and Fide Master Roel Abelgas at third and fourth with 43 Arena points apiece.
The online tournament had a time control of two minutes with an increment of one second and players must win as many games in two hours of play according to International Arbiter and National Master James Infiesto.
Making it to the list of top ten performers were National Master Henry Roger Lopez (fifth), Vince Duane Pascual (sixth), National Master Elwin Retanal (seventh), National Master Mark Jay Bacojo (eight), National Master Gerardo Cabellon (ninth) and 1st leg winner Jonathan Jota (tenth).
Adjudged category winners were Sherwin Tiu (Top Luzon), National Master Rommel Ganzon (Top Visayas), National Master Jonathan Tan (Top Mindanao) and National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. (Top Media).-Marlon Bernardino-
