
GM Antonio to banner Negros Open chess

MANILA---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. will spearhead a strong cast clashing in the Negros Open Chess Championship dubbed as 2022 GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Tournament set April 16-17 at the Lamberto Macias Sport Complex in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
The 60-year-old Antonio is notable for being the first chess player in the Philippines’ history to qualify for the World Cup in 2009, looms as the player to beat in the 9-round Swiss system tournament , 10 minutes plus 3 seconds increment time control format.
“I hope to do well in the upcoming 2022 GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Tournament in Dumaguete City," said Antonio, a 13-time Philippine Open Champion.
“I will pour all that I know in the mind boggling chess game,” added Antonio who is best to remembered to finish second in the 50-and-above division of the 27th World Seniors Chess Championship in Acqui Terme, Italy five years ago.
The Quezon City resident Antonio will also conduct a 30 boards simultaneous chess exhibition according to chess organizer Drigo Teves.
The 2 day event, hosted by Governor Roel Ragay Degamo offers a top purse of P10,000 plus trophy.
Other woodpushers vying in the event, sponsored by GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. family are National Master Merben Roque of Cebu, National Master Roullo Rolzon of Tanjay City, National Master Ted Ian Montoyo of Bacolod City and Henry Silva of San Carlos City. -Marlon Bernardino-
