MANILA---Displaying great moves on the board, Laguna Heroes scored twin victories in 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines All-Filipino Conference online chess tournament virtually held through Chess.Com Platform Wednesday night, March 16, 2022.

The inaugural champion blasted Mindoro Tamaraws, 15.5-5.5 before surviving from the hands of Caloocan Loadmanna Knights 11-10. The team still ranks on third of the Northern Division with 24 wins and seven loses.

The Heroes which is being supported by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Rotary Club of Nuvali is hopeful of advancing to the quarterfinals and also successfully defended the crown second times.

"Our wins against Mindoro and Caloocan solidified our position to be in the top 3 before the quarter finals. We are hoping and wishing to further improve our ranking,"said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.
The Heroes showed no mercy against Mindoro and embarrassed their competition from the get-go with Laguna immediately grabbing the 5.5-1.5 lead in the blitz category.

Mindoro’s struggles continued in the last seven playing boards in the rapid encounter as Laguna played with the same intensity as they did in the blitz category, notching four wins, two draws and one loss on their way to a convincing opening win.

Laguna had a convincing start against Caloocan as they immediately led 5-2 in the Blitz category on wins by two-time Asian Junior Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr., Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez, 8-time Illinois USA Champion International Master Angelo Young and Richie Jocson.
Barcenilla defeated International Master Paulo Bersamina in 78 moves of Scotch Game, Enriquez subdued Woman National Master Arvie Lozano in 49 moves of King's Indian Attack, Young won by forfeiture against US master Dwight Dans and Jocson beat Stephen Manzanero in 40 moves of Slav Defense.

Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus drew with International Master Jane Emmanuel Garcia in 39 moves of King's Indian defense while Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo split the point with International Master Barlo Nadera in 47 moves of Queen's Gambit Declined.

Paul Sanchez provided the full point for Caloocan after beating Vince Angelo Medina in 48 moves of Dutch Defense.

However, Caloocan toppled Laguna, 8-6, in the Rapid format but not good enough to secure the win.

The Pasig City King Pirates remain on top of the northern division standings with a 30-1 (win-loss) slate followed by San Juan Predators (26-5) at second and the Laguna Heroes (24-7) at third.
