Cavite Spartans sweep Cagayan and Rizal in PCAP online chess tournament

MANILA---The Cavite Spartans had another impressive performance in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online chess tournament after sweeping both of their matches in their Northern division back-to-back clashes virtually held over Chess.com platform on Saturday night, March 12.

The Spartans defeated the Cagayan Kings, 11-10, and the Rizal Batch Towers, 11.5-9.5.

It was a slow start for the Spartans against Cagayan after ending the first seven playing boards with just a one-point lead, 4-3, in the blitz game.

However, Cavite and Cagayan went on a 7-all stand off in the rapid event.

Thanks for the heroic wins of Arena Fide Master Eduardo Tunguia, Candidate Master Jayson Visca and Renie Malupa after beating Jose Jude Ulanday, Robert Mania and Alexander Jude Malabad on Board 4, 5 and 7, respectively.

Lourecel Ecot drew with United States master Jose Aquino Jr. on board 2.

Notable performances of Cagayan came from Don Tyrone delos Santos, April Joy Ramos and Jake Tumaliuan who brought down Arena Grandmaster Voltaire Marc Paragua, Arena Fide Master Melizah Ruth Carreon and Arena Fide Master Lloyd Rubio on Board 1, 3 and 6, in order.

Cavite's chess display continued until their last game against Rizal and finally regained their usual rapid board dominance against Rizal, 8-6.

The momentum-shifting three-board winning of Cavite came off huge wins from Carreon, Tunguia and Rubio.

Carreon toppled Kelly Ann David on Board 3, Tunguia subdued National Master Elias Lao Jr. on Board 4 while Rubio outclassed Geron Anore on Board 6.

Visca split the point with Marlon Constantino on Board 5 while Malupa settled a truce with Jefferson Mansanero on Board 7.
International Master Richelieu Salcedo III and National Master Noel dela Cruz provided the twin wins for Rizal after crushing Paraguya and Ecot on Board 1 and 2.

Earlier, Cavite and Rizal ended the first seven playing boards into a draw, 3.5-3.5.

The Spartans now has a 9-20 win-loss record in the Northern Division standings.

“We are happy with our twin wins tonight. It was a close fight against Cagayan and Rizal, they were hard-fought. All games were exciting until the endgames.” said Coach Ederwin Estavillo.
Meanwhile, Pasig City King Pirates (28-1) still on top in the Northern Division standings after beating Mindoro Tamaraws, 14-7, and the defending champion Laguna Heroes, 17-4.

Iloilo Kisela Knights (26-3) is lording the Southern Division standings after crushing Toledo City Trojans, 15-6, despite yielding to Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates, 9.5-11.5, in the following round.-Marlon Bernardino-
