
Laguna blasts Cebu in PCAP online chess tournament

MANILA---The Laguna Heroes showed another dominant performance after crushing the Cebu City Marchers, 20-1, during the 2nd season of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All Filipino Conference online chess tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform on Wednesday night.
"With a few games left before the knock out stage, the Laguna Heroes backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Rotary Club of Nuvali are peaking at the right time after dominating Cebu and looking to finish strong like we did the previous season," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.
As usual, the defending champion Laguna had a convincing start against Cebu as they immediately led 7-0 in the Blitz category on wins by two-time Asian Junior Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr., Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Michella Concio, 8-time Illinois USA Champion International Master Angelo Young, Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, Vince Angelo Medina and Apollo Agapay to raise their record to 18-5 in the Northern Division.
Barcenilla defeated Delfin Yang, Literatus toppled Mark Mangubat, Concio smashed Crys Jumao-As, Young nipped National Master Mark Mangubat, Lorenzo dealt Ariel Joseph Abellana, Medina waylaid Bhell Ortiz and Agapay outclassed Joel Pacuribot.
Pacuribot, meantime drew with Richie Jocson to prevent a possible shut out loss of Cebu.
Pasig still on top in the Northern Division with 22-1 win loss record while Iloilo Kisela Knights lodring the Southern Division with 21-2 slate.
The Laguna Heroes backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Rotary Club of Nuvali will face Olongapo Rainbow Team 7 and Manila Indios Bravos on Saturday.-Marlon Bernardino-
