
All eyes on WGM Janelle Mae Frayna

MANILA --- The country’s first and only Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Janelle Mae Frayna will be the player to watch when the Bayanihan Chess Club Goodwill Match Rapid Chess Tournament gets going on March 1 and 3, 2022 at the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE), 2nd floor, No. 56 Mindanao Avenue, Project 6, Quezon City.
The Opening Program will start at 1pm followed by Round 1 at 2pm according to Chief Arbiter International Arbiter (IA) Reden Cruz.
A cash pot worth P27,000 will be up for grabs in the 6-player field staking P10,000 to the champion, P5,000 for the second and P3,000 each for the third to sixth placers.
“I’m hoping for the best but the field is really tough because all participants have a chance to win it also,” said Frayna, who is fresh from winning the Philippine National Women’s Chess Championship.
Expected to give Frayna a run for her money are 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and Grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo.
Also seeing action in the double-round robin FIDE rapid event are former Asian Junior Champion International Master (IM) Ricardo de Guzman, International Master (IM) Paulo Bersamina and International Master (IM) Angelo Young.
The FIDE rapid event is backed by Dr. Jose "Joe" Carreon Balinas, Engr. Antonio "Tony" Carreon Balinas and GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Family coincide the birthday of Papa Rosendo Padilla Balinas Sr.in close cooperation with the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).-Marlon Bernardino-
