Tiu bags MPCL title

5 pts.---Ricardo Batcho, Recarte Tiauson

MANILA---Sherwin Tiu emerged as the top woodpusher in the Maharlika Pilipinas Chess Tour (MPCL) Over The Board Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Barangay Silangan Multi Purpose Hall in Quezon City on Sunday, February 13, 2022.

Tiu almost swept the seven-round Swiss system rapid chess competition by scoring a total of 6.0 points against other contenders from different parts of Metro Manila and nearby province.

Tiu won over Jomarie Monteza in the first round, Aanatoly Pascua Jr. in the second round, John Lee Antonio in the third round, Ryan Recososa in the fifth round, Samson "Chin" Lim in the sixth round and Don Tyrone Delos Santos in the seventh and final round.
He lost to Recarte Tiauson in the fourth round.

It was a heart breaking loss to Delos Santos, who won his first six matches and needed only a draw in his last round game against Tiu to secure the title.

Tiu took the crown with a winner over the other tie break points.
Tiu, a member of PCAP's Quezon City Simba's Tribe, bagged the P6,000 champion’s purse while Delos Santos pocketed P4,000 for his second place finish.

Rounding up to the top 10 were Samson "Chin" Lim, Esmael Abas, Jan Francis Mirano, Jerry Areque , Christian Carlo Paulite, Eliseo Budoso, Ricardo Batcho and Recarte Tiuason.-Marlon Bernardino-
