
Cavite Spartans secure back-to-back wins in PCAP Chess tourney

MANILA, Philippines---Cavite posted back-to-back victories over Cebu and Davao in the ongoing 2nd season of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All Filipino Conference online chess tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform Saturday, February 12, 2022.
The Spartans opened the day with an easy 21-0 default win over the Cebu City Machers and followed it up with a 12-9 victory over the Davao Chess Eagles to improve to a 3-10 win-loss record in the Northern Division, the same output of Mindoro Tamaraws at the start of North versus South matches.
Arena Fide Master (AFM) Melizah Carreon (Board 3), Arena Fide Master (AFM) Eduardo Tunguia (Board 4) and Venz Dwight Kwan (Board 7) were the top scorer for the Heroes with perfect six points.
“Melizah Carreon, Eduardo Tunguia and Venz Dwight Kwan stood tall by winning both their matches against Cebu and Davao," said Coach Ederwin Estavillo.
Against Davao, Carreon defeated Mary Israel Palero-Segarra in 61 moves of London System Opening in blitz portion then followed it up with a 70 moves victory in another London System Opening Skirmish in their rapid encounter.
The Davao City native Palero-Segarra is the official Philippines Girls representative during the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia in 2013 alongside Boys gold medal winner Grandmaster Wesley So.
Tunguia, on the other hand, swept National Master Alexander Lupian in 28 moves of Van't Krujis Opening in the blitz game and in 82 moves of a Dutch defense in the rapid format.
Kwan, meantime toppled Anthony Mosqueda in 59 moves of Reti Opening in blitz play then toppled Ariel Nino Aton in 33 moves of Trompovsky Opening in their rapid match ups.
Arena Grandmaster Voltaire Marc Paraguya (Board 1), meanwhile routed Fide Master Roel Abelgas in blitz then halving the point in rapid.
Renie Malupa (Board 6) yielded to Arena Grandmaster Henry Roger Lopez in blitz but split the point in rapid.
Reigning International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) world chess champion Fide Master Sander Severino (Board 2) and National Master Jonathan Tan (Board 5) carried the fight for Davao after beating Richard Cornell Manzano and Jayson San Jose Visca, both in blitz and rapid.
Cavite Spartans beat Davao Chess Eagles , 4-3, in blitz format and 8-6 victory in the rapid play.-Marlon Bernardino-
