
Mandaluyong chess champ to defend title in Pacquiao chess tourney

MANILA---Former Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong mainstay Garry Garcia will defend his title at the Hon. Sen. Manny Pacquiao Over the Board rapid (15 minutes plus 0 delay time control format) chess tournament to be held on February 13, 2022 at the Barangay Silangan Multi Purpose Hall in Quezon City.
The 39-year-old Garcia collected 6.5 points on six wins and one draw to win the seven-round tournament last February 6, 2022 held at the San Juan Gym in Taytay, Rizal.
Jerry Areque of Bacolod City is seeing action along with Vince Angelo Medina and Apollo Agapay of Cabuyao City, Laguna, Kevin Mirano of Aklan, Ricky Batcho of Valenzuela City, Kevin Arquero of Pasay City, Jhulo Guloran of Bulacan.
Areque, a famous street chess fighter from Luneta Chess Plaza and Padre Faura Chess Club won the inaugural event last January 8, 2022 held at Barangay San Felix in Santo Tomas, Batangas.
"We are grateful that Hon. Sen. Manny Pacquiao had expressed its utmost support to this grass roots chess tournament which is awaited by chess players not only in Metro Manila but also in the entire Philippines," said United States chess master Jun Panopio, one of the prime movers of the Manny Pacquiao Chess League.
The champion will earn P6,000 plus a trophy. The second placer will get P4,000 plus a medal , third placer will receive P2,500 plus a medal, fourth placer will bring home P2,000 plus a medal while the fifth placer will pocket P1,500 plus a medal.
Sixth to 15th placer will went home P1,000 each plus a medals.
"Entry fee P200, no-onsite registration, only vaccinated chess players can join."said tournament organizer Mr. Jun Panopio.
