
Laguna Heroes nip Isabela Knight of Alexander in PCAP chess

MANILA---The Laguna Heroes on Monday's (February 7, 2022) re-scheduled game pulled out a 12.5-8.5 victory over Isabela Knight of Alexander to remain tied for first place in the 2nd season of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All Filipino Conference online chess tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform.
Pasig City King Pirates toppled Rizal Batch Towers, 17-4, and San Juan Predators routed Olongapo Rainbow Team 7, 17-4, was enough to tie them with Laguna Heroes at 8-1 win-loss slate in the Northern Division.
The threesome of Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. (Board 1), Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus (Board 2) and Apollo Agapay (Board 7) orchestrated Laguna’s 8-6 win in the rapid contest.
Barcenilla, a two-time Asian Junior Champion, checkmated International Master Joel Banawa in 43 moves of English Opening, Agincourt Defense, Literatus beat National Master Gerardo Cabellon who loses on time in a drawish pawn end game in 85 moves of Queens Pawn Opening, Torre Attack System while Agapay walloped Marvin Phua in 80 moves of Scandinavian Defense.
Board 5 Vince Angelo Medina drew with Lordwin Espiritu while Board 6 Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo split the point with Melchor Foronda III.
Board 3 Diana Ramos and Board 4 National Master Edmundo Gatus provided the twin wins for Isabela after beating Michella Concio and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, respectively.
"We got a hard-earned victory against Isabela. It was another lucky win. I am happy that GM Banjo Barcenilla, FM AJ Literatus and Apollo Agapay delivered the needed points in the rapid tonight," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.
Backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes also beat Isabela Knight of Alexander, 4.5-2.5, in the blitz portion.
PCAP, the country’s first and only play-for-pay chess league, is headed by Atty. Paul Elauria as President-Commissioner; Michael Angelo Ong Chua as Chairman; Dr. Ariel Potot as Vice Chairman and Atty. Arnel Batungbakal as Treasurer.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra, and supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), led by Chairman/President Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.-Marlon Bernardino-
