Garry Garcia wins Pacquiao Over the Board rapid chess tournament

MANILA---Former Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong mainstay Garry Garcia pocketed the top honors in the Hon. Sen. Manny Pacquiao Over the Board rapid (15 minutes plus 0 delay time control format) chess tournament held at the San Juan Gym in Taytay, Rizal on Sunday, February 6, 2022.

The 39-year-old Garcia collected 6.5 points on six wins and one draw to win the seven-round tournament.

Garcia scored victories over Marianne Venice Gaddi in the first round, Allan Pelias in the second round, Antonio Cruz Jr. in the third round, Alexis Emil Maribao in the fourth round, Kevin Arquero in the fifth round and Kevin Mirano in the sixth round.
He split the point with Ricardo Batcho in the seventh and final round.

“I'm very very happy right now,” said Garcia, a delivery helper at Karl Cris Tradings.

Garcia receive P6,000 champion’s prize.

Mirano, Eliseo Budoso and Nazario Ubanan had 6.0 points each. However, Mirano had better tie breakpoints to take home the P4,000 second-place purse, Budoso settled for the P2,500 third placer purse while Ubanan got P2,000 fourth placer purse.
Rounding up to the top 15 were fifth Batcho (5.5 pts.), sixth Maribao (5.5 pts.), seventh Arquero (5.5 pts.), eight Jerry Areque (5.0 pts.), ninth Joven Balsalubre (5.0 pts.), tenth Vince Angelo Medina (5.0 pts.), eleventh Cruz (5.0 pts.), twelve Jesus Benjamin Lising (5.0 pts.), thirteen Jhulo Goloran (5.0 pts.), fourteen Stephen Manzanero Jr. (5.0 pts.) and fifteen Narciso Gumila Jr. (5.0 pts.).-Marlon Bernardino-
