Bernardo wins 2022 Philippine FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 1st Leg

MANILA---National Master Darry Bernardo of Angeles City, Pampanga lived up to expectations by crowning himself champion of the 2022 Philippine FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 1st Leg held last January 22-23, 2022 at the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) headquarters in Project 6, Quezon City.

Bernardo split the point with Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo of Calamba City, Laguna in the fifth and final round to finish with a total of 4 points and claim the P5,000 cash prize and a champion's trophy.

Runner-up was Vince Angelo Medina of Cabuyao City, Laguna, who had a lower tiebreaks over Bernardo 4 scorer, received P3,000 and a runner-up place trophy.

The champion Bernardo drew with Medina in the fourth round after eking out wins over Viona Nepascua of San Simon, Pampanga, Divine Grace Luna of Dasmarinas City, Cavite and Alexis Emil Maribao of Caloocan City in the past three rounds.

Medina, on the other hand, beat National Master Edmundo Gatus of Tondo, Manila in the last round to tie with Bernardo on top.
Medina, earlier beat Woman National Master Rizalyn Jasmine Tejada in the first round, settled a truce with Lorenzo in the second round then subdued National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan of Taguig City in the third round.

Organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by it's chairman/president Senior Deputy Speaker Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. in close cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, applying 90 minutes plus 30 second increment time control format.

Tournament Director is Fide Senior Trainer/Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, Chief Arbiter is International Arbiter Reden Cruz while Deputy Arbiter is Arbiter NA Joseph Delos Santos and NA Ma. Hazel Olendo and assisted by arbiters NA Dr. Ariel Potot, NA John Eric Abaro, NA WFM Michelle Yaon, NA NM Rodolfo Toledo, NA Hanz Tutica and NA J Jay Pattugalan.-Marlon Bernardino-
