Dableo wins GM Balinas online chess tourney

MANILA---International Master Ronald Dableo won the Pamaskong Handog GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. online chess tournament on Thursday, December 23, 2021.

Dableo, an enlisted member of the Philippine Army, finished with 73 points in 28 games for a win rate of 61 percent and performance rating of 2756 to win the event that drew 636 players.

The event was presented by Lichess Battle Arena, organized by Dr. Joe Balinas and Engr. Antonio Balinas of Bayanihan Chess Club in close cooperation with Atty. Rudy Rivera.

The online tournament had a time control of three minutes with an increment of two seconds and players must win as many games in two hours of play, according to Dr. Joe Balinas and Engr. Antonio Balinas of Bayanihan Chess Club.

Dableo, who is also coach of the University of Santo Tomas Chess Team, won 17 games, drew 5, and lost six games for his aggregate score and the P4,000 top purse.

Dableo needed to raise his FIDE Standard Rating 2407 to 2500 to complete his Grandmaster Title Status.

Dableo, the 2003 Asian Zone 3.2a Chess Championships ruler in Vungtau, Vietnam, already completed his three (3) Grandmaster norms requirement.

Grandmaster Darwin Laylo took the second spot with 71 points on 33 games and a win rate of 58 percent on nineteen wins for a performance rating of 2685 and the P2,000 second place price.
In third place is International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia who had 59 points, followed by fourth placer Fide Master Roel Abelgas who had 56 points.

13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. finished fifth with 55, followed by sixth National Master Rommel Ganzon, seventh International Master Michael Concio Jr., eight International Master Marvin Miciano, ninth Mark Jay Bacojo and tenth placer Fide Master Sander Severino who had 53, 51, 49,49 and 48, respectively.-Marlon Bernardino-
