Garcia rules Kamatyas Rapid Open Chess

PARANAQUE CITY--- International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia scored 2.5 points in the last three rounds to emerge as the overall champion in the Kamatyas Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the MultiSys Headquarters Multinational Village Sunday here.
Garcia, Program Head of Ateneo de Manila University Chess Team under the guidance of Athletic Director Emmanuel Fernandez drew with International Master Ronald Dableo in the fifth then beat International Master Daniel Quizon in the sixth and Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. in the seventh and final round.
He finished with 6.5 points on account of six wins and one draw in the seven-round tournament, which was organized by the Kamatyas Chess Club headed by International Master Roderick Nava, sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supervised by Tournament Director Byron Gabrentina Villar of Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation.
Garcia was awarded the top prize of P20,000 in this 1-day event back up by Founder and CEO of software engineering solutions provider Multisys Technologies Corp. David Almirol Jr.
Two players – Dableo and Sherwin Tiu– shared second to third places with 6 points.
Dableo bested National Master Edgardo Garma while Tiu toppled International Master Ricardo de Guzman in the last round.
Dableo, one of the top players of Philippine Army chess team and coach of the University of Santo Tomas Chess Team pocketed the runner-up prize worth P15,000 while Tiu, member of the Pasig City King Pirates of Mayor Vico Sotto went home with the third prize of P10,000.
Rounding up to the top ten (10) are fourth Antonio (5.5 pts.), fifth Quizon (5.5 pts.), sixth Fide Master Roel Abelgas (5.5 pts.), seventh Grandmaster Darwin Laylo (5.5 pts.), eight National Master Darry Bernardo (5.5 pts.), ninth De Guzman (5.5 pts.) and tenth Lennon Hart Salgados (5 pts.).
Sharing the limelight were International Master Chito Garma (Top Senior), Woman Fide Master Cherry Ann Mejia (Top Lady), Ronald Hermida (Top 2000 and below), Christian Mendoza (Top 1800 and below), Cyrus James Damiray (Top Kiddie) and Zeus Lester Manaois (Youngest Participant).-Marlon Bernardino-
