Quizon draws vs Bersamina, stays on top

MANILA---International Master Daniel Maravilla Quizon drew with International Master Paulo Bersamina in 40 moves of a Closed Sicilian defense to stay on top after the nine rounds of the 2021 Philippine National Chess Championship Barkadahan Para sa Bansa FIDE-rated over-the-board Chess Championships at the Solea Hotel and Resort in Mactan, Cebu Monday.

The Dasmarinas City, Cavite bet Quizon fought hard but failed to squeeze out a victory and settled for a draw against Bersamina.
Quizon remains on top with 7.5 points in the tough, 12-player-field, single-round tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

One and half-a-point behind is International Master Ronald Dableo who drew with International Master Joel Pimentel in 30 moves of Slav defense.

Dableo now has 6 points. He needs to raise his 2407 Fide standard rating to 2500 to complete his GM title status. He already completed his three (3) GM norms requirements.

International Ricardo de Guzman split the point with Grandmaster Darwin Laylo in 63 moves of Bogo Indian defense. De Guzman and Laylo, both tallied 5.5 points apiece.

In other matches, International Master John Marvin Miciano drew with International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia in 20 moves of Giuco Piano Opening, Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. halved the point with International Master Michael Concio Jr. in 31 moves of Caro-Kann defense and Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna settled for a draw with Allan Pason in 42 moves of Catalan Opening.

The six-day event was being bankrolled by PSC chair Butch Ramirez, NCFP president Rep. Butch Pichay, POC president Rep. Bambol Tolentino, Chess Movement Chairman Dr. Ariel Potot, PCSO vice chair and general manager Royina Garma and Atty. Roel Canobas.

Aside from a slot to the AIMAG set in Bangkok and Chonburi, Thailand in 2023, a champion’s purse worth P80,000 plus P50,000 and P25,000 for the second and third placers, respectively, will be up for grabs, according to NCFP CEO GM Jayson Gonzales.-Marlon Bernardino-
