The pre-eminent international boxing organization, the World Boxing Council, has effectively endorsed the Nike print advertising campaign featuring Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao.

Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today learned that WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman, son of president Don Jose Sulaiman, had approved the use of the WBC name in the ad copy as well as the WBO logo and an image of the championship belt.

Sulaiman also pointed out that the ad copy had missed out the fact that Pacquiao was also WBC flyweight champion aside from winning the IBF super bantamweight crown and the WBC super featherweight title.

Pacquiao won the WBC flyweight title with a sensational eighth round KO win over Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul in December 1998.

Pacquiao won the WBC super featherweight title with a hard-fought split decision over Mexico?s Juan Manuel Marquez and both the Sulaiman father and son tandem hailed Pacquiao?s victory and congratulated both President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the Filipino people for the victory and President Arroyo?s consistent support and concern for Pacquiao as well as the sport of boxing.

The advertising agency for Nike, Wieden and Kennedy had reportedly sought approval from the WBC for use of its name for a six month period from the start of its campaign which would include print media, trade and consumer publications, outdoor advertising as well as electronic and digital media among others.

The Pacquiao Nike ad will be used in the Asia-Pacific region and is a clear recognition of the incredible popularity and impact made by Pacquiao among a huge audience in the vast region because of his remarkable ring exploits. He is expected to have earned a substantial amount for the ad which was shot in a closed-door session at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym while preparing for the rematch with Marquez. Other big-name Nike stars include incomparable golfer Tiger Woods and NBA super star Kobe Bryant.

Pacquiao is currently enjoying a welcome break from his rigorous training program that demands major sacrifices having to be away from his charming wife Jinkee and their three children for at least two months while in training.

Although Pacquiao is being lined up for a move to the lightweight division to fight WBC champion David Diaz nothing has as yet been finalized with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer eager to have Pacquiao agree to a third fight with Marquez who is now being handled by the Oscar De La Hoya outfit.
