The pandemic has put to a halt nearly all sports-related activities in the past one and a half years. As the country starts to recover from the effects of the pandemic and restrictions start to ease up, more and more people are keen to play sports again.

Quezon City District 4 Councilor Hero Bautista hopes to bring back friendly competition between residents through a sporting event that is currently being planned out by the local government unit. The district has 38 baranggays, making in the biggest district in Quezon City and the sportsfest aims to build camaraderie between people living in the district.

The initial plan sees competition in chess, table tennis, darts, billiards, ethnic sports, and badminton – sports that can be played while staying in line with social distancing protocols. Councilor Bautista envisions a long-term sporting event bringing together the best players in each barangay. “We are planning to have the sportsfest run for 2 months, with the best of the best from each barangay competing against each other. We are excited to partner with local LGUs and the Sangguniang Kabataan for this project,” Bautista shared.

The organizers are currently waiting for the COVID-19 Inter-Agency Task Force’s (IATF) approval of their proposed project.-Marlon Bernardino-
