MANILA, Philippines---Filipino National Master (NM) Ivan Travis Cu of San Juan City secured the runner-up honors in the Eastern Asia Youth Online Chess Championship Under 12 Boys division virtually held at Tornelo Platform from October 1 to 3, 2021.
The 12-year-old Cu, a Grade 7 student of Xavier School in San Juan City under the guidance of head coach IA Rolando Yutuc collected 7.5 points on seven wins, one draw and one loss, to tie Yichen Zhou of China and Nho Kiet Dinh of Vietnam in the No.2 spot in this 144 player's field World Chess Federation (FIDE) event.
The Filipino chess wizard, however, grabbed the silver by virtue of superior tiebreak points, leaving Zhou in the third and Kiet Dinh in the fourth place.
Dinh Bao Khang Nguyen of Vietnam and Arena Grandmaster and National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City, Davao del Norte placed fifth to sixth places who totes 7 points apiece.
With the latest feat, Cu bagged the country’s four silver-medal finish.
Bonjoure Fille Suyamin of General Trias City, Cavite (Silver U12 Girls) , Chester Neil Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal (Silver U16 Boys) and Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmarinas City, Cavite (Silver U18 Girls) also won silver medal in their respective division.
Cedric Kahlel Abris of Mandaluyong City , meanwhile took the Bronze Medal in the Under 14 Boys category.-Marlon Bernardino-
