
NM Cu rules blitz online chess tourney

MANILA, Philippines---National Master Ivan Travis Cu ruled via tiebreak the 1st ITC Bicol Chess Players Team online blitz tournament virtually held on Monday, August 30, 2021 at Lichess.org Platform.
The 12-year-old Cu was tied for first-second places with National Master Carlo Lorena 6 points apiece in the five minutes plus three seconds increment time control format which attracted 61 woodpushers.
With the highest tiebreak points, Cu took the title while Lorena finished second.
Cu, a Grade 7 student of Xavier School, San Juan City under the guidance of coach IA Rolly Yutuc, scored victories over Harold Alianza in the first round, Alex Amatonding in the second round, Marvid Zuniega in the third round, National Master Carlo Lorena in the fourth round, National Master Glennen Artuz in the fifth round and Joeven Polsotin in the sixth and penultimate round. He lost to Jess Calabia in the seventh and final round.
Last Monday, August 30, 2021 celebrating the National Heroes Day and 125th Araw ng Pinaglabanan, Cu receives a Plaque of Recognition from the City Government of San Juan, as per City Resolution No. 110, Series of 2021, for being recognized as a National Master for Chess.
"We would like to express our thanks to the City of San Juan, headed by our city leaders, Hon. Mayor Francis Zamora, Hon. Vice Mayor Warren Villa, and the esteemed members of the City Council. It is an honor and privilege for our family, most especially for our son, Ivan to have been recognized for this achievement. It will surely inspire him to continue in striving to improve in his sport. On this memorable occasion, we would like to share this award with our present day heroes, the frontliners who labor tirelessly to keep us safe, and our fellow San Juaneños. Thank you and God bless," said Mr. Teddy Cu, father and coach of Ivan.
It shall be recalled that last August 24, 2021, Cu topped the National Master Ronald Llavanes Birthday Arena competition (Individual Tournament).-Marlon Bernardino-
