L-R: Jerusalem, Apolinario and Apolinar.
The Games and Amusement Board (GAB) has named minimumweight Melvin Jerusalem, light flyweight Dave Apolinario and featherweight Pete Apolinar as Co-Boxers of the Month for July 2021 as it bared its latest national rankings during the GAB Monthly Virtual Press Conference yesterday, August 30.
The GAB through Chairman Abraham Khalil Mitra also revealed that it has acquired Hematoma Machines to be used as additional medical tool apart from CT Scan to immediately determine extent of especially head injuries incurred not only in boxing and combat sports but also other athletic events prone to physical contacts or accidents. Mitra said GAB has acquired a number for immediate deployment and use in the field.
Jerusalem, Apolinar and Apolinario were cited for their recently winning prestigious regional and international boxing titles. Jerusalem won the OPBF minimumweight crown over fellow internationalist and world rated Toto Landero via 12 round unanimous decision in Talisay City. Apolinar captured the OPBF silver featherweight title by 12th round TKO over Jess Rhey Waminal in Mandaue City. And Apolinario won the WBA Asia South light flyweight plum via 4th round KO over Charlie Manlupanque also in Talisay City.
Chairman Mitra also made special mention of the recent winning performances of pro boxers Johnriel Casimero and Mark Magsayo in the US and the unprecedented success of the Philippine boxing team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics who brought home two silver medals and a bronze medal through Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Felix Marcial. He said these developments only augur well for Philippine boxing which he predicted would be replete with activities in the coming months starting with two local promotions set for September.
Mitra lauded the crucial role of the Inter Agency Task Force Against Covid 19 in the ongoing recovery of boxing and other professional sports being regulated by the GAB. He said the GAB and the pro sports stakeholders will continue to closely coordinate and work with the IATF to ensure the safety of athletes, the fans and other people involved in the holding of professional sports in the country.
