Fernandez settles for 3rd overall in Sharjah Chess Open Standard Over the Board

MANILA, Philippines---Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Dandel Fernandez made the country proud anew by finishing 3rd overall in the August Classical Tournament 2021 (Sharjah Chess Open Standard Over the Board) held from August 20 to 26, 2021 at the Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

Fernandez, an employee at Saudi German Hospital Dubai, defeated Mariam Essa of United Arab Emirates using the disadvantageous black pieces in the 9th and final round to finish 6 points on 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 loses.

This is the same output of another Filipino entry 4th placer Nelman Lagutin and 5th placer Abdulrahman Mohammad Al Taher of United Arab Emirates.

“I would like to dedicate my victory to my countrymen. It’s an honor to represent our country,” said Novelty Chess Club top player Fernandez, who settled for 3rd place after tie-break points were applied.

It shall be recalled that Fernandez spearheaded his company in the last World Corporate Chess Championship.

Candidate Master Mohamed Saeed Laily of United Arab Emirates scored 7.5 points to claim the title.

Woman Fide Master Al Maamari Wafia Darwish of United Arab Emirates notched 6.5 points to land at 2nd place.

Rocky Pabalan placed 10th with 4.5 points, Francis Erwin Dimarucut placed 14th who totes 4 points while Danilo Reyes settled 16th place with similar 4 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
