MANILA, Philippines---Woman National Master Jersey Marticio of the Philippines secures back-to-back win after beating Liu Kelsey of the United States of America in the FIDE Online Rapid World Cup Cadets & Youth -Girls 14 and under online chess championship virtually held at Tornelo Platform.
Marticio, an incoming Grade 9 student of Pulo National High School in Cabuyao City Laguna, triumphed using the white pieces after 47 moves of a Sicilian defense in Saturday’s 6th round.
The 14-year-old Marticio improved to a total of perfect 6 points to grab the solo leadership board.
Marticio earlier brought down Woman International Master Ellen Wang of the United States of America with the black pieces after 54 moves of Queen's Gambit Exchange in Friday's fifth round.
"It was an intense match," said Marticio.
"These things can happen when you want to win so much and are playing so intensely," she added.
Woman Fide Master Alexandra Shvedova of Russia and Lee Yesun of the USA defeated their respective rivals to share 2nd to 3rd places with 5.5 points apiece.
The chess whiz kid’s stint in the FIDE Online Rapid World Cup Cadets & Youth -Girls 14 and under online chess championship is being supported by Cabuyao City Mayor Mel Gecolea, Cabuyao City Sports Director Jerome Paul Lualhati, Bayanihan sa Cabuyao Executive Director Michael Aranzanso and Cabuyao Chess Committee Chairman & President of Philippine Executive Chess Association Dr. Fred Paez.
Meanwhile, Woman National Master Candidate April Joy Claros yielded to Woman Fide Master Kai Ni Agnes Chong of Malaysia after 53 moves of Gruenfeld defense in Saturday’s 6th round.
With the loss, the Angeles City, Pampanga bet Claros was stuck at 4 points and dropped into a tie for 21st to 43rd places in this 155 player's field World Chess Federation-FIDE tournament.
Claros halved the point with Saffiah Maisarah Mohd Fadzli of Malaysia after 42 moves of London System Opening in Friday's fifth round.
WFM Kai Ni Agnes Chong, on the other hand led the huge group of 5 pointers that include Saffiah Maisarah Mohd Fadzli of Malaysia, Liu Kelsey of the USA, WFM Fiorella Contreras Huaman of Peru, Irina Poliato of Russia, Rajanya Datta of India, Davida Strong of South Africa, Kseniya Norman of Belarus and Jemima Paulo of Angola.
Another Filipino entry, Ruelle Canino, split the point with Maria Teresa Jimenez Salas of Peru after 66 moves of London System Opening in Round 5 then subdued Emily Maton of England after 73 moves of English Opening in Round 6. Canino, the pride of Cagayan de Oro City raised her total 4.5 points, good for a tie 13th to 20th places.
Woman National Master Lexie Grace Hernandez of the Philippines finished tied for second in the Girls 16 and under. The 15-year-old Hernandez, a grade 9 student of Holy Angel University in Angeles City, Pampanga tied Woman Fide Master Amina Kairbekova of Kazakhstan and Woman Fide Master Davaakhuu Munkhzul of Mongolia at eight points.
After the tie break points was applied, Kairbekova finished second, Munkhzul got 3rd while Hernandez settles fourth.
With her victory, Hernandez joined other top 10 finishers to barge into the knockout stage of the tournament.
The final stage on August 26-31, 2021 , consists of 16-players KO tournament based on 2 games (with alternate colours) and possible one Armageddon tie-break according to Hernandez staunch supporter Mr. Jimmy Reyes.
For 4th place - She will have the right to participate in FIDE Online Rapid Grand Prix Series 2021 And to receive Diploma from FIDE added Reyes.
