MANILA, Philippines---International Master Daniel Quizon did what he was supposed to do: simply draw his 9th and final round match to qualify for the FIDE World Chess Cup.

The 16-year-old Quizon drew with top seed Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia after 30 moves of Queen's Gambit Accepted to claim the title with 7 points.

A few hours later, International Master Michael Concio Jr. secured the other World Cup slot by winning the final round against second seed Grandmaster Novendra Priasmoro of Indonesia scoring 6.5 points and also finishing solo second place in the Asian Zonal event dubbed as Zone 3.3 Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship Sunday, May 9, 2021 on Tornelo platform.

The-15-year-old Concio squeezed out a win in a theoretical end game (rook and bishop versus rook) against Priasmoro after a marathon 106 moves of a Closed Sicilian defense.

Quizon and Concio, playing under the guidance of Dasmariñas City Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and national coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas, both ensured first round purse worth US$3,750, or a whopping P187,500. A total cash pot amounting to US$1,892,500 (P94 million) is at stake with the US$110,000 (P5.5 million) going to the champion in the biennial FIDE World Cup slated in Kochi, Russia on July 10 to August 6, 2021.

"Congratulations to International Master Daniel Quizon for winning the Zone 3.3 Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship on Tornelo assuring himself of a slot in the main draw of the FIDE World Cup slated in Kochi, Russia on July 10 to August 6, 2021," said national coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas.

"Congratulations also to International Master Michael Concio Jr. finishing solo second place in this Asian Zonal event and bagging the 2nd slot to the FIDE World Cup," he added.

"Great Times Great Hopes and Great Future For Philippine Chess. Support our young chess talents," said US based frontliner Dr. Joe Balinas, co-founding chairman of Bayanihan Chess Club and younger brother of GM and Atty. Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr.-Marlon Bernardino-
