MANILA, Philippines---International Master Daniel Quizon outwitted compatriot International Master Michael Concio Jr. to grab the solo lead in the Zone 3.3 Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship Saturday, May 8, 2021 on Tornelo.
The 16-year-old Quizon, took the open e-file with his Queen and penetrated the seventh rank forcing the 15-year-old Concio to resign on the 40th move of their Spanish duel.
Quizon, the pride of Dasmariñas City, Cavite under the guidance of Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and national coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas, solidified his bid for one of the two slots to the World Cup this July in Sochi, Russia in the nine-round Swiss system event.
He now has 6.5 points in the FIDE-sanctioned tournament, half point ahead over second seed Grandmaster Novendra Priasmoro and International Master Mohamad Ervan of Indonesia.
Priasmoro defeated International Master Tin Jingyao of Singapore after 37 moves of Spanish Game while Ervan split the point with countryman International Master Sean Winshand Cuhendi of Indonesia after 21 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening, Schliemann variation.
In other eight and penultimate round results, top seed Grandmaster Susan Megaranto of Indonesia agreed a draw with National Master Merben Roque after 88 moves of London System Opening, Fide Master Lik Zang Lye of Malaysia halved the point with untitled Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo after 53 moves of Gruenfeld defense while International Master John Marvin Miciano drew with Fide Master Jagadeesh Siddharth of Singapore after 56 moves of Birds Opening.
In Sunday's ninth and final round match, Megaranto faces Quizon, Concio goes up against Priasmoro, Lye opposite Ervan, Cuhendi will test the mettle of Roque and Tin Jingyao will square off with Miciano.
Fifty-two players from six nations are taking part in the event that has a prize fund of $1,500 (about P75,000) according to National Chess Federation of the Philippines Chairman/President Senior Deputy Speaker Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. who watched the game live streaming through chess24.com.-Marlon Bernardino-
