ILL-TRAINED MAYOL KO?D IN MEXICO

Former world contender Rodel Mayol has suffered a fourth round knockout at the hands of undefeated Mexican Adrian ?El Confesor? Hernandez in the Top Rank card ?Latin Fury? held in Guanajuato last Sunday, Manila Time.

Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today learned that Mayol was signed up for the fight by Canadian Michael Koncz and did not even know who his opponent was until he arrived at the weigh-in.

Mayol?s supposed opponent was reportedly overweight and was substituted by the hard-hitting Hernandez who had a record of 9 knockouts in 11 wins with no defeats.

We were also informed that Mayol hadn?t trained for the fight but took it in any case since his wife was pregnant and was expecting a baby anytime and Mayol needed the money. WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa who recently returned from Los Angeles also told us that Mayol hadn't been in serious training.

What was even worse is that the former world challenger was clearly not ready to take on a fighter of the caliber of Hernandez without the proper training. However, Mayol reportedly had Hernandez in trouble in the third round but ran out of steam and was knocked out in the fourth.

The defeat came just as Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao was ready to but out the contract of Mayol from Japanese manager whose Filipina wife Gina Matsuoka had already agreed to a deal with Pacquiao?s friend and confidant Rex ?Wakee? Salud.

Salud said they already had an agreement with WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa to defend the title against Mayol but that the Filipino?s fourth round KO in Mexico would almost surely ruin the chances of getting a title shot.

Mayol lost by an eighth round TKO to IBF light flyweight champion Ulises Solis last August 4 . Mayol had Solis on the verge of a knockout but couldn?t put him away and was in turn stopped in the eighth round. In that fight too Mayol complained of being taken by Koncz to train in Las Vegas where there were hardly any sparring partners at his weight which hampered his training.
