The Diliman College Blue Dragons have just captured the UCBL (Universities and Colleges Basketball League) championship earlier this week beating their counterparts from Olivares College, 63-57 in Game 3 of heir the best-of-three finals in their rivals? turf in Para?aque City.
Coach Rensy Bajar?s Blue Dragons, not only improved their last year?s runner up finish in the same tournament, but, likewise, more than justified their formal entry to the PBA D-League, which, in recognition to Diliman College?s involvement in sports aimed at developing a strong and healthy citizenry as mandated by the Constitution.
Bajar, incidentally, is the school?s athletic director responsible to overseeing its sports program that, already, has been producing not a few national athletes ? J Japoy Lizardo and Amber Acosta in taekwondo, for instance and no less than half-a-dozen more in swimming, which, unfortunately, still don?t merit recognition by the country?s high priests in sports as the Philippine Aquatic Sports Association, the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine sports Commission.
Products of Diliman College in swimming are, no doubt, the best compared to their counterparts recognized by PASA in terms of their performance records, but the country?s said sports governing bodies continued snubbing them in the selection of teams dispatched to carry the Philippines? colors in big international competitions like he Southeast Asian Game, Asian Games and the Olympics.
Thanks to the undying efforts of Diliman College President and CEO, former Sen. Nikki Coseteng, and Philippine Swimming League president, Olympian Susan Papa, outstanding athletes continue to be developed in the hope that days will come when their products are recognized.
Besides basketball, taekwondo and swimming, Diliman College is also involved in the development of chess, table tennis, badminton and pep squad, all in boys and girls and high school.
But that?s another story this OUTSIDER will be discussing in future columns.
Back coach Rensy? Blue Dragons. Did you know that in the past three years alone, the team crowned itself champion five times in local plays and three times in international arenas. They won the Fr. Martin?s Cup last year and repeated the feat this year.
The Dragon emerged the winners, too, of the YBC (Youth Basketball Cup) in 2017 and the Republika Cup in thee same year and the National Collegiate Basketball League in 2015.
Members of the newly-crowned UCBL titlists are Johnnel Rey Bauzon, Joseph David Brutas, Avin Van Coquia, Robbi Marion Darang, Mozrgan de Guzman, Billshan Carl igno, Mc Arhtur John Enriquez, Kevine Steeve Gandieto, Aldrin Ligon, Tommy Lisika, John Mahari, Neil Vincent Nunag, Ismael Pacheco, Jose is Miguel Pizarro, Mikhael Salazar Jaen, Earl Luis Salazar, Jethro Sombero and Jam Mikko Rey Tam.
