MANILA, Philippines -- Prolific Filipino promoter Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde delivered another exciting "Night of Champions" boxing show Wednesday (Sep 20), thrilling fans in attendance at the Mall of Asia Music Hall here in Metro Manila, Philippines.
In the main event, titlist Joe "The Jaw Braker" Noynay (15-2-1, 5 KO's) of Bogo, Cebu, successfully defended his WBO Asia Pacific Youth Super Featherweight Belt by scoring a round 8 TKO win over tough challenger Zhang Quixiu (9-5-1, 3 KO's) of Dalian, China.
The southpaw Noynay, 23, dominated with his superior boxing skills making good use of his long right jab and left straights as well as landing combinations at the coming-forward Chinese warrior who was betting on one power punch, swinging one punch at a time, mostly overhead blows. Noynay, in contrast, employed a variety of punches in his attacks, displaying a wider repertoire.
By the fifth chapter the "Jaw Breaker" had already broken the defense of Zhang and by the eighth, the 22 year-old Chinese was rocked down to the blue canvas of the Mall of Asia.
Bravely, he stood up at the count of veteran referee Ferdinand Estrella. But the second landing was worst. Zhang fell bad flat on his back, prompting his coach Cui Di of Dalian's Eagle Totem Boxing Stable to throw the white towel, ending the battle at the 1:56 minute mark in round eight.
The Chinese earned the applause of the fans while Noynay retained his belt, a result that advances his fighting career.
The supervisor was GAB Chairman Abraham "Baham" Mitra.
Referee Ferdinand Estrella raises the hand of Joe Noynay as GAB chairman Abraham Mitra is set to put on the waist of Noynay the WBO strap.
In the thrilling co-feature, Alfonso "Al" Toyogon (9-2-1, 6 KO's) of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, ravaged tough Nathan Bolcio (14-15-3, 4 KO's) of the Highland Boxing Gym, dispatching him in an exciting combat to claim the vacant WBC Asia Silver Super Featherweight Silver belt.
Bolcio, 28, went down two times in the first stanza, but he bravely stood up, coming back forward throwing punches of high caliber, some of them landing solidy on his tormentor. Bolcio even managed to win some rounds, proving his toughness, but the superior boxer was Toyogon who in the eight sent Bolcio spiraling to the canvas for a third time.
One more time Bolcio came back on his feet beating the count of stellar New Zealand-born referee Bruce MacTavish. Things proceeded really rough for Bolcio as the relentless Toyogon was not letting him off the hook, bombing him even further till Bolcio capitulated at the 44 second mark of round 6.
