Second Overtime: As a fake Canelo lurks, a real blockbuster looms

LAS VEGAS -- In a world of fake news and fake Facebook accounts, a fake Canelo Alvarez was sighted at the T-Mobile Arena yesterday, an appearance that took some of the edge off what had been a belligerent weigh-in.

Canelo Alvarez looked a little dehydrated, like a strip of dried mango. If Clint Eastwood was the Pale Rider, Canelo must be the Pale Fighter. But the red-headed, red-blooded Mexican, who tipped in a 159.4 pounds, packed an extra sauce of anger as he charged at Gennady Golovin looking for a brawl.

GGG was 159.6 pounds of serenity. Amid Canelo's antics, Golovkin was devoid of emotion and merely darted a blank stare. Wisely, the 36-year old Kazakh chose to fight only on Saturday night when the punches are not only allowed, but are actually warranted.

But before the savagery of this highly-anticipated rematch, a dose of comedy was most welcome.

Larry Treybig looks exactly like Canelo's long lost twin. Rising to fame as "Americanelo," Treybig, decked in all-white and accessorized by Larry King suspenders and designer shades, got busy with desperately selfie-seeking fans.

Larry obliged PhilBoxing with an interview. It was short, but long enough to reveal that he is a mixed martial arts practitioner who has since transitioned to competitive boxing. He might not be related to Canelo alright, but the sweet science also runs in Larry's blood.

WHEN THE OPENING BELL rings tonight, it will mark 366 days since their disputed draw at the same venue. GGG is year older now at 36, but he has yet to concede a slower step.

Alvarez is only 28 but he has actually fought in more total rounds than Golovkin, 364 to 184. Because of his high knockout rate of 87 percent, GGG has fought only an average of 15.3 rounds a year in 12 years, while Canelo has boxed for 30.3 rounds a year for nearly the same span.

I pick GGG in a close decision. His hammer right hand is a sleep inducer and he could score a late stoppage if Canelo fades and gets too dangerously close.

MONEY MAKER. Regardless of outcome, both fighters will never have to worry about money ever again. Canelo is already assured of a $5 million fight purse while GGG cashes in $4 million.

They split the pay-per-pay revenue 52.5 to 47.5 in favor of Alvarez, a deal that will generate many millions more for both sides, said Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

Forbes.com reported that the rematch is sold out and poised to make more than the $27 million the first fight earned in gate receipts.
