Maasin City hometown hero Adones Aguelo won handily over the ever resilient Jhun Ryan Quimbo from Compostela, Cebu in the main event of the Maasin 18th Cityhood Anniversary Boxing Showdown last night at the City Bus Terminal.
Amid the cheer of kababayans rooting for him, Aguelo pummeled Quimbo with combinations to the head and body but the Cebu fighter would occasionally taunt the Maasin fighter with arms spread out or with his head shook as if to send a message that he was not hurt by those punches.
The opening rounds went to the visiting fighter as Quimbo surprised Aguelo with an aggeregate of jabs and straights which visibly hit the Rex Wakee Salud fighter. All three judges scored the bout 97-93 for Aguelo to snatch the victory by unanimous decision.
In the supporting bout, Renoel Pael of Matalom, Leyte edged Royder Lloyd Borbon of Sultan Kudarat with a split decision in an eight rounder. Two judges saw it 77-75 for Pael while the third judge had it 77-75 for Borbon.
Australian Daniel Huculuck battered Roldan Malinao of Cagayan de Oro for four rounds to grab a unanimous decision win, 40-34 in all judges scorecards.
Japanese Toushin Tugs Battulga was not able to fight because his opponent Tata Tadena of Bohol had a high blood pressure since weigh-in up to fight night and was declared unfit to fight by the ring physician.
In the supporting amateur bouts, here are the results:
Romie Evale of Maasin City defeated Jeco Suico of Cebu City by unanimous decision in the 53 kg. elite category
