Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao has no more excuses not to fight WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez in a rematch which is what a majority of fight fans want to see.
Schaefer told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that negotiations for the Pacquiao-Marquez rematch with Top Rank?s Bob Arum ?are going well.?
The Golden Boy Promotions top executive revealed that Marquez had ?made concessions? to help make the fight happen. Without providing details Schaefer said Marquez made concessions ?as it relates to the purse and the weight.? Marquez had earlier indicated that since Pacquiao?s camp claimed he had problems making the 130 pound limit he was willing to move up to 135 and fight Pacquiao as a lightweight.
Schaefer said that considering the readiness of Marquez to make the twin concessions ?there is no excuse for Manny not to do the fight.?
However, in an earlier interview with Dennis Principe broadcast on dzSR Sports Radio, Arum said it was ?not imperative? for Pacquiao to fight Marquez. In the scenario drawn up by Arum which would satisfy Pacquiao?s serious desire to fight three times next year he would first fight WBC lightweight champion David Diaz (33-1-1, 17 KO's) who is Arum?s fighter, ?win the lightweight championship, very prestigious, and then give Marquez a rematch when Manny is the champion. Manny deserves to go into the ring as the champion in fighting Marquez.?
Arum disclosed he would present two deals to Pacquiao when they meet in Las Vegas for a thanksgiving dinner although Arum appeared to be leaning towards his own fighter, David Diaz, which would present less complications compared to having to deal with Golden Boy fighter, Marquez.
Arum told Principe ?if Manny is thinking about going up in weight , winning the lightweight title, then he will fight (David) Diaz? which will happen on March 15. Arum added ?then in July he can fight Marquez for the lightweight championship? which appears to jibe with what Schaefer said except that the Marquez fight will happen only after the Pacquiao-Diaz showdown.
There was no indication as to why Arum appeared confident that Pacquiao would beat the southpaw lightweight champion Diaz.
