Shawn Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs), the former sparring partner of fighting senator Manny Pacquiao, is set to clash with former WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (34-1-0, 20 KOs) on Sept. 8 for the vacant WBC welterweight title at the Barclays Center in New York City.

Porter, who has shown interest in a title fight against Pacquiao is a former IBF welterweight titlist but failed to defend his title against Kell Brook in 2014 at the StubHub Center in Carlson California.

The 30-year-old native of Akron, Ohio, suffered his second career loss against hard-hitting Keith Thurman in 2016 at the Barclays Center in New York City for the WBA welterweight title.

Porter, who was unbeaten when he flew to the Philippines to spar with Pacquiao in 2009 said he was amazed by Pacquiao?s speed and power as he was in his prime back then. In a FyteHub TV interview last year, Porter said Pacquiao is the hardest puncher he has faced.

Still, Porter wants a piece of the eight-division world champ. He has shown interest in facing Pacquiao even before the Paquiao-Horn fight in Brisbane last year.

Now that Pacquiao is back in the spotlight after trashing Lucas Matthysse of Argentina last April 15, his next foe must be someone who can bring more revenue to the fight. At this time, Porter may have to wait for another crack at his former sparring partner.

Porter is facing one of the most skillful and experienced boxer with enviable pro career record. Garcia, who was born in Philadelphia to a mother and father from Puerto Rico, started training early in his childhood. At 10, his father who was a boxer then, brought him to Harrowgate Boxing Club in Philadelphia, not far from the place where he spent his childhood. He recorded 107 wins with only 13 defeats in his amateur fights before turning pro.

When he turned pro after becoming a US National Champion in 2006, Garcia made his professional debut in 2007 at the Bogota Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He won his first fight via KO and remained unbeaten in 33 fights spanning 10 years.

In March 2017, Garcia lost his WBC welterweight title against Keith Thurman via a split decision. It was a thrilling and competitive fight which could have ended in a draw but judges saw Thurman winning on points. It was the only loss in Garcia?s 11-year pro career.

It would be a tough fight for Porter judging from their individual career records. While both of them have more than 30 pro fights to their credit, Garcia has the advantage in height (5 ft 8 1⁄2 in (174 cm) against Porter?s 5 ft 6 in (168 cm) while Porter has the advantage in reach at 69 1⁄2 in (177 cm) against Garcia at (68 1⁄2 in (174 cm). Both are orthodox fighters.
