PUMAR KO?D IN 29 SECONDS IN TITLE FIGHT

Former WBC International minimum weight champion Gabriel Pumar has been knocked out in a mere 29 seconds of the first round in an IBO minimum weight title fight against undefeated South African Nkosinathi Joyi at the Great Centenary Hall in Port Elizabeth.
It was the second fighter of Rex ?Wakee? Salud to be knocked out in the first round in recent weeks after Eriberto ?Yukka? Gejon was annihilated in 69 seconds by Nicaragua?s undefeated Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez last November 3 in Tokyo.
A report from South Africa said Joyi gave Pumar who was rated No. 28 by the IBO in its November rankings, no time to settle down. He came out fast and connected with both hands and demolished the challenger with 30 seconds remaining in round one.
Joyi had not fought since winning the vacant title in a second round stoppage of another Filipino Armand de la Cruz in November last year and was on the verge of being stripped of the title because of inactivity.
Despite the layoff Super Sports reported that Joyi came into the Pumar fight ?as sharp as a razor with dazzling hand speed, faultless timing and astounding power. He even snapped Pumar?s head back with jabs off the back foot.?
A seemimngly confident Pumar met Joyi in the middle of the ring and reportedly ?replied to the champion?s early onslaught with a few good-looking punches but his confidence soon started vaporizing as Joyi made almost every punch count.?
The report said the clash of the two southpaws provided fight fans with some breathtaking action as long as it lasted until Joyi ? landed a few solid rights to the head, rained in powerful lefts and sealed the bout with a right to the rib cage.? The Filipino went down and stayed down until Australian referee Phil Austin counted him out.
Joyi improved to 18-0 with 13 knockouts while Pumar dropped to 9-2-1 with 6 knockouts.
Pumar won the WBC International minimum weight title with a seven round stoppage of Tsehpo Lefele but lost the crown to Zukisi Kwayiba last September after he suffered a cut over his left eye.
