
Taher, Wang top blitz at 2018 Asian Universities Chess Championships

TAGAYTAY CITY---AFTER wining the individual standard play, Fide Master Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Gunadarma University of Indonesia and Woman Grandmaster Wang Jue of Capital University of PE and Sports of China topped the individual blitz event at the conclusion of the 2018 Asian Universities Chess Championships Friday night at the Tagaytay International Convention Center here.
Taher tallied 6.5 points to add another gold medal for Indonesia. His teammate IM Farid Firman Syah notched 6 points to settle for second place and went home with the silver medal in the blitz men's competition. IM Xu Yi of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics of China won the bronze with 5.5 points.
Taher, Farid and IM Muhammad Lufti Ali also won the standard team.
Xu along with IM Wang Chen and IM Wang Yiye won the silver medal in the men's standard team play.
In the distaff side, WGM Wang scored 6.5 points to win the gold medal in the blitz event. Nie Xin and Woman International Master Mengjie Qiu, both tallied 5.5 points each and settled for second to third place, respectively.
Qiu, Xin and Rui Liao spearheaded Shanghai University of Finance and Economics of China into a gold medal finish in the standard team play.
Capital University of PE and Sports of China spearheaded by WGM Wang Jue, Manli Liu and Hu Yu settled for the silver.
The Philippines has bagged at least two bronze medals in the standard team play.
The women's team-composed of Woman International Master Bernadette Galas, Woman Fide Master Shania Mae Mendoza and Woman International Master Marie Antoinette San Diego settled for the bronze in the women's team event.
Far Eastern University which is composed of IM John Marvin Miciano, Istraelito Rilloroza and NM John Merill Jacutina added another bronze medal for the country.
The week-long event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's chairman/president Surigao del Sur. Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. and secretary-general Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Tagaytay City government led Mayor Agnes Tolentino.
Tournament Director is International Organizer Casto "Toti" Abundo of Asian Chess Federation while International Arbiter Bong Bunawan of Indonesia is the chief arbiter assisted by International Arbiter Patrick Lee and Fide Arbiter Lito Abril.(Marlon Bernardino)
