PHL Bags Two Bronze Medals in Asian Universities Chess Championships

TAGAYTAY CITY---THE Philippines has bagged at least two bronze medals at the conclusion of the 2018 Asian Universities Chess Championships yesterday at the Tagaytay International Convention Center here.

The women's team-composed of Woman International Master Bernadette Galas, Woman Fide Master Shania Mae Mendoza and Woman International Master Marie Antoinette San Diego, tallied combined 16 points and settled for the bronze in the women's team event.

Led by Woman International Master Mengjie Qiu, Xin Nie and Rui Liao, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics of China won the gold medal with a combined 18 points while Capital University of PE and Sports of China spearheaded by WGM Wang Jue, Manli Liu and Hu Yu settled for the silver with a total combined points of 17.5 points.

Osmania University of India which is composed of WFM Sahajasri Cholleti, Goud Palle Ankitha and Sri Divya landed at fourth over-all edging fellow 14.5 pointers and fifth placer Malaysian Team of Nur Nabila Azman Hisham, Li Ting Tan and Nur Najiha AZman Hisham in a tie break points.

In the individual women's event, Wang (7.5 pts.), Qiu (7 pts.) and Nie 6.5 pts.) won the gold-silver and bronze for the Chinese domination.

In the men's team play, Far Eastern University which is composed of IM John Marvin Miciano, Istraelito Rilloroza and NM John Merill Jacutina added another bronze medal for the country.

They beat fellow 15.5 pointers Philippine Team (IM Paulo Bersamina, FM Mari Joseph Turqueza and Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano) in a tie break points.

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics of China (IM Xu Yi, IM Wang Chen and IM Wang Yiye) won the gold medal with a combined 17 points.

Gunadarma University of Indonesia (FM Yoseph Theolifus Taher, IM Muhammad Lufti Ali and FM Farid Firman Syah) took the silver with a combined 16.5 points.

FM Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia bested FM Jeevitesh Sai Agni of India in the final round and went home the men's title with 7 points.

Top seed IM Xu Yi of China yielded to IM Farid Firman Syah of Indonesia.

Despite the setbacks, Xu remains at 6.5 points and settled for second place with a superior quotient over third place IM Muhammad Lufti Ali of Indoensia and 4th place IM Wang Chen of China.

The week-long event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's chairman/president Surigao del Sur. Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. and secretary-general Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Tagaytay City government led Mayor Agnes Tolentino.

Tournament Director is International Organizer Casto "Toti" Abundo of Asian Chess Federation while International Arbiter Bong Bunawan of Indonesia is the chief arbiter assisted by International Arbiter Patrick Lee and Fide Arbiter Lito Abril.

Meanwhile, the staging of the two-day (June 2 and 3, 2018) FIDE (World Chess Federation) Arbiters' Seminar gets underway at the Rizmy Hotel, Cabuyao City, Laguna.

The two-day FIDE seminar hosted by Cabuyao City, Laguna in cooperation with the National Chess Federation of Philippines (NCFP) and with the Asian Chess Federation and under the auspices of FIDE. The Lecturer will be IA Casto "Toti" Abundo and Assistant Lecturer will be IA Patrick Lee. The language of the Seminar will be English.

The Seminar will give norms for the FIDE Arbiter title according to the Regulations for the titles of the Arbiters.
