Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao who watched the lopsided twelve round decision scored by reigning WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez over a game but outclassed Rocky Juarez says Marquez was ?not impressive? although the champion clearly impressed all three judges at the Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona yesterday.
Pacquiao watched the fight which was telecast on a slightly delayed basis by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN Channel 2 anchored by veteran boxing commentator Sev Sarmenta and the well-known boxing lady Dyan Castillejo with IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire as special guest analyst in the studio.
In a long distance telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today from his home in General Santos City where he watched the fight, Pacquiao said Marquez was ?slow and had no real power? noting that he couldn?t take out a much smaller Juarez despite catching him with some good right hands in the later rounds.
Pacquiao exuded supreme confidence in the event he faces Marquez in a rematch stressing ?kayang kaya ko.(I can take him easily)."
Pacquiao spoke to us shortly before leaving for the hospital in General Santos City because of a terrible cough which he said has bothered him for some time now. Even during the conversation Pacquiao was coughing badly and sounded really ill which made us decide to cut the conversation short.
Both Pacquiao and his handlers have made no decision on who will be his next opponent. Pacquiao himself has indicated it would depend on which fight will bring him the most money although the consensus among fight fans as well as WBC president Jose Sulaiman and Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya is that to cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats Pacquiao must defeat Marquez because they have some unfinished business to settle.
That?s because despite dropping Marquez three times in their first meeting as featherweights in May, 2004, the talented Mexican counter-punched effectively the rest of the way to salvage a draw.
After whipping Juarez, Marquez who opened up a nasty cut over the left eyelid of Juarez by an accidental head-butt, said he wants Pacquiao next. But whether the handlers of the Filipino led by Top Rank?s Bob Arum will answer the call remains to be seen. Arum himself has told us in the past it all depends on who Pacquiao wants to fight and that they hope to make a decision after the Humberto Soto-Joan Guzman fight on November 10.
As Juarez? cut continued to bleed and he was being ripped apart by the combinations of Marquez, his corner told him the only way he could win was by knockout but despite catching the champion with a couple of good shots, Marquez was never in trouble and all three judges gave him the victory by wide margins of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111.
