The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in coordination with the Maasin City Government and the Maasin City Sports Council conducted the Children's Games to more than 1,000 kids from the 70 barangays of Maasin City on March 24-25 at the Anatalio Gaviola Plaza and the City Gymnasium.

The PSC management was headed by Commissioner Ramon "Tito" Fernandez, Maasin-born former four-time PBA MVP, and they were welcomed by Vice Mayor Maloney Samaco and Councilor Zaldy Olita. The children participants, who were between 9 and 12 years old, were accompanied by their respective barangay captains, some kagawads, and chaperons.

"The Children?s Games, which was believed to be the first step towards discovering new talents from the grassroots level," said Commissioner Fernandez.

"These Games will make our kids reduce their time from their gadgets such as cellphones, tabs, laptops, desktops and TV and let them enjoy outdoor life and the games we played when we were kids," said Vice Mayor Samaco.

This is also in line with President Rodrigo Duterte's anti-drug abuse program among the youth. It also aims to promote peace and camaraderie in the local government units.

?We included parlor games because we wanted to reconnect the children to cultural education. We made them experience what we have experienced when we were kids. While the sports side will expose them to early identification as to what sport path they have to follow in the future,? said PSC Visayas coordinator Nonie Lopez.

Sports clinics were made for the children in basketball, volleyball, athletics, arnis, and badminton. They played parlor games such as patentiro, tug-of-war, Maria went to town, Chinese garter, karang, and pabitin. These games were slowly fading from the children's interests due to the advancement in technology.

The PSC also held the Smart Mapping Action Research Talent Indetification (Smart ID) to create a database wherein the attributes of the young athletes? aged 8 to 12 years old will be recorded. The database will give an overview of the athletes? profiles and determine what appropriate sport that athlete should be developed in.

The Children?s Games was first staged in Davao City last May and Marawi and Baguio City last July all of last year.

Because of this program, PSC was given due recognition by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in a summit held in Kazan, Russia in the International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport delegates from around the world.

"The Constitution also mandated us to nurture the children, promote values formation thereby improving the citizens' quality of life. Giving value to the children has an institutional foundation. The children are the future of the country," said PSC Chairman William Ramirez
