CHICAGO -- PLDT-SMART 60 kg lightweight Genebert Basadre who beat Bulgarian Ognyan Kolev in the previous round, took on Faraj Al Matbolif of Jordan in the Sunday afternoon session here at the University of Illinois Chicago Sports Pavilion (Monday Philippine time).

Basadre took an early lead, piling on points with straight rockets en route to a near RSCO stoppage (Referee Stop Contest Outscored). Basadre was shy just one point in round three of the twenty point mercy rule when the two-way foul fest and point deductions began. Both Basadre and Al Matbolif entangled themselves in rough housing tactics that saw both men wrestling on the floor several times. When the ugliness cleared, it was Basadre?s lead right landing all night that won him the fight, as his right fist seemed magnetically attracted to Al Matbolif?s chin. The fight ended with scores of 29-7 for the Cagayan de Oro City native Basadre. (Note: RSCO does not apply to round four).

Filipino fans and teammates, including 1970 Thailand SEA Games gold medalist Ricardo Fortaleza of the famed Fortaleza brothers, who traveled all the way from Sydney, Australia got a scare when Basadre drew one warning closer to being disqualified.

With two wins on the day of my arrival and two wins on the day of my departure from Chicago to my real world of treating injured athletes, I am happy to have taken part in an event of this magnitude. After four days and several hundred fights later in the ?Windy City,? I can now fly home to my patients, peace and solace knowing that three of our seven National Team Members are still in contention for the AIBA World Championship Title.

In lieu of my absence, I am fortunate to have the seasoned journalist, esteemed sports television host and friend, Billy Velasco, take my place in covering our remaining three boxers in their quest to capture Beijing Gold. If Philboxing was a television show, I would be saying, ?Reporting live from Chicago, this is JV Tuazon signing off. Take it away Bill!?

Note: Tomorrow will be an event wide rest day with fights resuming on Tuesday.
