MANILA -- Lu Hui-Chan of Chinese Taipei and Kenichi Ichigaki of Japan took the first two spots of the WPC qualifying tournament at the Star Billiards Center on Saturday, October 27.

Lu beat compatriot Ching Yu-lung 9-2 in the final of the first qualifier. The field consisted of 80 players.

Ichigaki, for his part, outlasted Do Huang Quan of Vietnam 9-3 in the second qualifier, which consisted of 79 players.

Filipino players were noticeably absent from the semifinal rounds of the competition. The host players faded early.

"The field this year is very competitive," said tournament coordinator Sol Gueco. "Some think the qualifier format is tougher than that of the WPC main draw."

The qualifying tournament is being hosted by Mr. Sebastian Chua, president of Star Paper Corporation and Star Billiards, which is the exclusive distributor of Brunswick billiard tables and Aramith billiard balls in the Philippines.

Action continues at 8 am this Sunday, October 28 at the Star Billiards Center, with two spots again up for grabs and 173 players slated to play.
